[Blog Tour] A Nurse to Claim His Heart by Juliette Hyland

A Nurse to Claim His Heart
Juliette Hyland
(Neonatal Nurses, #1)
Publication date: March 29th 2022
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Will a fake relationship turn into a forever romance? Find out in Juliette Hyland’s latest Harlequin Medical Romance, the first story in the Neonatal Nurses duet!

A picture is worth a thousand words…What about a viral video?

When Dr. Benedict saves an infant on the Washington Metro, the treatment he performs with nurse Penny becomes the talk of the town—and social media! Not least because the world thinks they’re a couple… While a real relationship is a no-go zone for divorced Benedict, prolonging their “faux-mance” is the perfect way to raise vital hospital funds. But the longer their ruse goes on, the more real it feels!

From Harlequin Medical: Life and love in the world of modern medicine.

EXCERPT:

“I think you need a rebound.” Alice opened the dating app on her phone, flipped it toward Penny and started scrolling through the images of eligible singles...or people claiming to be single.

Would she ever fully trust someone again? She wanted to. She really did.

Her heart flipped as her brain waffled. Her bed was lonely, and on nights when her shift in the NICU was overwhelming, she wished she had someone besides her sister to comfort her. To cradle her to sleep. Intimacy was so much more than a physical connection...though she missed that too.

“I’m not interested in a rebound, Alice.” She laughed as an image of a man wearing a Mickey Mouse shirt, holding up a large fish with the caption I’m Your Catch, crossed her sister’s phone’s screen. “Does that image really work for picking up single woman?”

“We could ask?” Alice wiggled her finger toward the phone.

“Or we could swipe left!”

“Spoilsport.” Alice playfully glared at her as she swiped left and held up the next potential match.

He was cute. The profile said he was a broker and into hiking. She looked over the profile, then shook her head. “Nope. He’s not a dog person. Who doesn’t like dogs?”

Alice looked at the picture, then shook her head. “He’s adorable and it doesn’t say he doesn’t like dogs, just that he prefers cats. You can’t look for perfect. Sometimes Mr. Right Now can become Mr. Right...assuming you aren’t looking for a real Prince Charming. The secret prince only exists in those cheesy holiday movies we gobble up between Thanksgiving and Christmas every year.”

Maybe fairy tales were rare, but they existed—she refused to give up that belief. But she didn’t feel like arguing with her sister tonight.

“If you’re so interested in the men on that app, maybe we should pick out your date for next Friday.” Penny giggled, moving her finger toward the screen as her sister pulled the phone away.

“My dating life is quite healthy, thank you very much. But yours has been dismal since you moved back. You work, read trivia books, watch trivia shows, draw and go to bed. The repetition is even getting to me.”

“I wasn’t aware my love of trivia bothered you—or maybe it’s that I always beat you.” Penny chuckled as she held her wine glass in a mock toast to her sister.

“Stop changing the subject.” She showed off another eligible bachelor. “The best way to get over someone is to get under someone else, you know.” Alice winked as she held her phone up for Penny’s inspection, but far enough away that she couldn’t actually touch the screen. “He’s cute.”

The man on the screen was cute. Well built, with a deep smile and eyes that looked kind. But images were easy to fake. Still, as she looked at the smiling man, part of her yearned for a connection. Not with a stranger on a phone app, but a real connection.

EXCERPT:

GRAYSON

Dex and I sit before the hearth. Breakfast sits on a tray before my favorite chair. Maybe it’s because this spot is so warm and cozy. Perhaps it’s due to the fact that Dex and I are alone. But whatever the reason? An idea hits me. I stand before the fireplace and make my announcement.

“I thought about what you said last night,” I declare. “We should go to the lake. I could use my magic to raise another mirror and… things.”

This concept isn’t as crazy as it sounds. After all, I conjured mirrors back at the Bartlebee. Through those magical items, I know what happens between a man and a woman. Or in the case of me and Dex, two wolf shifters.

Leaning back in his chair, Dex kicks his legs forward. I can’t help but notice the bulge in his leather pants.

This is so wrong.

“Eat.” says Dex, his voice low and growly.

“What?” I can’t help looking at his length again. “We haven’t even kissed.”

That sly grin of his only deepens. “Eat breakfast, Grayson.”

“Right, breakfast. I need breakfast.”

Why, oh why, aren’t I sitting down?

“You need your strength, Grayson.” That growly voice is still doing things to me. “Take your seat or I’ll put you there.”

Alyssa Roat
(The Wraithwood Trilogy, #2)
Publication date: March 15th 2022
Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult

The bane of Mordred, the son of Mordizan, and a millennia-old prophecy—together they may provide what Brinnie needs to defeat the world of magic’s greatest threat.

More than a year has passed since Brinnie left Wraithwood, never expecting to see it again. But when Mordred captures her sister, she is thrust back into the world of magic. She flees to Wraithwood, where she learns of a prophecy located in the dark wizard capital of Mordizan that reveals the identity of “Mordred’s bane,” something that could destroy Mordred for good.

Brinnie agrees to a rendezvous with Mordred to exchange herself for her sister, going undercover at Mordizan as a spy to find the prophecy and Mordred’s bane. There, she weaves a complicated web of secrets, lies, and tenuous friendships. She makes an unexpected ally in Marcus Vorath, son of the Master of Mordizan, who fears the implications of Mordred’s growing power. But in Mordizan, friends and foes may be one and the same.

In the midst of court intrigue, battle, ominous new depths to her power, and searching for Mordred’s bane, Brinnie struggles to draw the lines. How far is she willing to go to destroy Mordred? And how much of herself is she willing to give up along the way?

Goodreads / Amazon

EXCERPT:

Something thudded behind her. Brinnie pivoted, heart sinking as the door swung open and the man stepped out. He pulled a long, glowing blade out of his jacket and balanced it on his hand.

It pointed directly at Brinnie and Maddy.

He looked at Maddy and grinned. “I’ve found you, shadow walker.”

Oh, no.

Maddy’s head cocked. “What? I’m—”

“Come on.” Brinnie grabbed her wrist and towed her in a headlong run toward Building E.

Their feet slapped the concrete in a spastic rhythm as Maddy nearly tripped. “What are you doing?” she squeaked.

“He thinks you’re me.” Brinnie dragged her around the corner of Building E and slid to a halt in front of the chain-link fence. She shoved Maddy forward. “Climb it.”

“I can’t—”

“Just do it.”

Brinnie spun, not waiting to see if Maddy obeyed. She settled into a defensive position, facing the man as he rounded the corner. “You’re chasing the wrong person!”

He stopped, scanning the fence, the ground, adjusting his grip on the knife. “Don’t play games with me, shadow walker. Show yourself.”

The fence rattled behind her. If she could stall him long enough, maybe Maddy could get away, and then she could make a run for it as well, using invisibility to her advantage. “And why would I do that?” she taunted. “I think I have the upper hand here.”

“I disagree.” He reached inside his jacket, revealing another sheath. “Do it, or your human friend dies.”

Brinnie glanced at Maddy, now over the fence, frozen and staring. Run, you idiot. “She doesn’t know. You’ll die, too.”

“I don’t believe you.”

She faced him squarely, even though he couldn’t see her, putting herself between him and Maddy. “It’s the truth.”

“I guess we’ll find out.” He flicked a small knife out of the sheath.

Great. Throwing knives. Did they all take the same how-to-throw-knives classes? Brinnie braced, ready to shield Maddy with her own body if she had to. She’d taken a knife before.

And nearly died.

The man pulled back his arm.

And from somewhere behind Brinnie, a ball of fire blasted toward him.

[Blog Tour] Daemon Blood by Mary Maddox

Daemon Blood
Mary Maddox
(Daemon World, #3)
Publication date: March 8th 2022
Genres: Adult, Fantasy, Horror

Our war will not unfold in your imaginary heaven. We will fight on Earth with human beings as pawns and weapons.

Lu Darlington is a seer, bound to the daemon Talion through ritual and blood. It’s not a role she enjoys, but she has little choice: daemons take what they want and destroy whoever stands in their way.

So Lu’s surprised when Talion doesn’t punish her for her newfound ability to keep him from possessing her whenever he likes. In fact he’s pleased. The stronger she is, he explains, the more powerful he becomes.

And he needs that power, because a war is brewing in the daemon world, a war that will be fought by—and through—humans.

Lu’s friend Lisa Duncan can’t see daemons but she’s seen what they can do and so has stayed far away from Lu for years. After a bizarre attack on Lisa leaves half a dozen people dead and she learns it’s just the first skirmish in the daemon war, Lisa realizes the safest place to be is with Lu.

Then Talion sends Lu away to teach her skills to another seer and Lisa must stay behind to look after Lu’s son Solly, conceived through a daemon ceremony with Talion. At four years old Solly’s seer abilities are already so strong Lisa is sometimes more afraid of Solly than for him.

As Talion’s enemies grow bolder, Lisa and Lu face attacks from every direction. There seems little hope any of them will survive—until Talion and his allies devise a plan.

The only problem is how much it will cost.

“With Daemon Blood, Mary Maddox has crafted a timeless tale of good against evil. With compelling characters and a keen sense of the darkness that lurks within us all, Daemon Blood will stay with you long after you turn the final thrilling page.”

— David Sodergren, Author of The Forgotten Island

EXCERPT:

In twenty minutes she finds a cheap plane ticket online for tomorrow afternoon. She books a return flight for two weeks from now—long enough, she hopes, for the cops, gossips, and reporters to lose interest in Willard Steeples’ murder. She decides to pack her suitcase ahead of time except for her toothbrush, medications, and a few other items. Those can go in a carryon that she’ll pack tomorrow.

Lisa feels bad about sneaking off without telling her parents. Steve would probably let her go, but Mom would have a fit.

She hauls her largest suitcase from the overhead shelf of her bedroom closet and opens it on the floor. She packs jeans and sweatshirts and a wool sweater for dressy occasions. Then she rifles through her underwear drawer in search of something that might keep her halfway warm in the Utah winter.

Her hand brushes a photograph on the bottom of the drawer—a portrait of her, taken by a professional photographer when she was thirteen or fourteen. She put it there right after she came home from the hospital—back when she still hoped the surgeons could work a miracle.

Ash blond curls frame her plump teenage face. Her skin, enhanced by the photographer’s retouching, glows like a pearl. Her eyes sparkle with expectation. Not even the braces on her teeth diminish her smile. Those braces came off a few months before Mom sent her to Utah and Rad destroyed her innocence along with her face. Even if the surgeons could have made her flawless, the girl in the photograph died fifteen years ago, that night on the mountain.

Lisa takes the photograph from its cardboard holder and rips it in half.

[Blog Tour] For the Murder by Gabrielle Ash

For the Murder
Gabrielle Ash
(The Murder, #1)
Published by: City Owl Press
Publication date: February 22nd 2022
Genres: Adult, Urban Fantasy

A lone crow is a dead crow.

That’s what Diana Van Doren, exiled crow shifter, has always believed. The last murder of crow shifters known to exist wouldn’t accept her into the flock, leaving her vulnerable. Worse, her kleptomaniacal father’s schemes put them in a demon’s crosshairs. Without the support of the murder, Diana fears death will come all too quickly. So when an opportunity to steal a rare blade that can kill anything—even demons—crosses their path, she decides to play her father’s games one last time.

However, she isn’t the only one hoping to take the blade. Sasha Sokolov, a clairvoyant, has been forced from childhood to serve the very demon hunting Diana and her family. After two decades of service, his boss finally offers him what he can’t refuse: freedom. All he has to do is bring in the knife and the Van Dorens, and his bloodline will be free from serving the demon forever.

When Diana and Sasha meet at the auction, they strike an uneasy alliance. Diana sees a way to finally be welcomed into the murder. Sasha sees an opportunity to get his freedom. To get what they want, only one of them can walk away with the blade. But when their magic inexplicably links as they reluctantly work together to steal the knife, betraying each other for their own ends may no longer be an option.

Goodreads / Amazon

EXCERPT:

Sasha flicked ash onto the ground, focusing on the feel of the cigarette between his fingers instead of the overwhelming urge to groan. He’d been doing this shit for Madame and her gang of conscripted agents for two decades. Despite only being thirty-two, he felt ancient.

It was always something.

“Get my knife. Get the crows.” Madame leaned forward, fire dancing inside her irises. “If you get them both, I’ll cut you loose.”

He frowned as another brisk chill rolled over him and brushed his sandy-blond hair across his forehead. “Surely you don’t think I’m falling for that.”

“I knew you wouldn’t, so I brought this.” Madame reached inside her fur coat and pulled out a rolled-up something. Sasha stared at it longer.

Cow hide. His heartbeat quickened exponentially as his honey-gold eyes took in the leather. He knew exactly what that was.

“Bring me my knife and those goddamn birds dead or alive, and I’ll sign this.” Madame unrolled the hide. While only about a foot long, the sharp strokes of dark, inky blood spelled out an intimately familiar set of terms. “You’ll be unemployed.”

Sasha fought to breathe.

“In the meantime”—Madame rolled up the hide and gave him a sly look—“I have a new one.”

He managed to take a breath. The demon watched him exhale, gaze hard and fixed on his jugular, and she put the hide back inside her coat. “I am not inclined to sign another one of those.”

“This one you will. Already signed. Fresh.” She pulled out another hide, unfurled it, and let it lie flat atop her hands.

The prospect of freedom proved much too strong for him to ignore. Sasha took a step closer, just enough to see Madame’s jagged calligraphy.

“If you present both the knife and the Van Dorens, I’ll incinerate your original pledge.” Madame extended her hands out farther and gave him a glimpse of her true name etched at the bottom in an unfamiliar alphabet.

Sasha dropped his cigarette on the ground and crushed it beneath the sole of his oxford.

Years of servitude to Madame could be over. Done.

He could go back to Chelyabinsk. He could see his mother again.

His family would be freed from a monster.

EXCERPT:

MYLA

SIXTEEN YEARS OLD

An hour later, I sit in the back row of Ghost World class. Before me, forty students sit in long rows of desky-chairs. All the seat-backs have special holes for everyone’s tails.

Welcome to Purgatory.

As dictated by our ghoul overlords, we students all wear gray sweats, matching T-shirts, and mangy sneakers. Our teacher, Boogerlips, stands at the front of the class. Like always, BL wears the long black robes as every other ghoul (except my honorary older brother, Walker, who is exceptionally cool, even if he is undead.)

Not for the first time, it hits me that BL looks like someone took baby features and scrunched them all up into the middle of a very large and adult face. Her thin brown hair is fashioned into a bowl cut. And yes, there’s something small and white that’s stuck on her mouth. Ugh.

“Pay attention, class,” says BL. “I have a special treat for you today. For weeks now, we’ve been learning about ghosts. Today, that world will be brought to life with a guest speaker—a real conjurer!”

The class claps. Even my best friend, Cissy, looks extra happy. And that’s saying something—Cis already maintains a pretty high level of chipper. She’s tall and lithe with curly blonde hair and a perma smile. Her golden retriever’s tail is perfectly matched with her sunny attitude.

I wave at Cis. “Psst.”

She shoots me the side-eye. I’m forever getting Cis in trouble for talking in class. Over the years, she’s learned that if she doesn’t look at me full-on, it can throw the teachers off. “Yeah?”

“What’s a conjurer?”

“Are you serious? We’ve been talking about nothing else for months.”

“Ghosts aren’t my thing. You know me.”

BL pulls the class door open. A super-tall guy steps into the room. He wears long red robes with the cowl pulled low over his face. You can’t see the dude’s eyes or anything, but his chin and lips are visible. And damn, does this dude ever have a lot of fangs. I can’t decide if I want to kill him… or watch him eat an ear of corn.

Eh. Who am I kidding? It’s kill him.

I raise my hand. BL points to me. “Yes, Myla?”

“This guy doesn’t seem like a safe person to have around children. Do you need someone to destroy him?”

Cis slams her forehead onto her mini desk. It’s her move when I’ve just said something the other kids might find super weird.

Sure enough, the rest of the class gasps. Whatever. They’re just jealous they didn’t ask for dibs on killing our guest speaker.

Goodreads / Amazon

EXCERPT:

(Maeve):

“According to an ancient scroll discovered a few hundred years ago, there will come a human with god-like powers— an Eda.”

I yawned. “Excuse me,” I muttered. “How does a human become an Eda?”

“We only know what the scroll tells us, and according to the scroll, when the sacrifice is made, the Eda is born.”

He paused a moment and stared at me, seemingly deep in thought. Finally, slowly shaking his head, he spoke again. “This world is full of mysteries.”

Leaning back, I crossed my arms over my chest. “What were you thinking?”

“When?”

“Just now.”

“I only hope this prophesied Eda is good. If you give a human ‘God-like’ powers,” he shook his head, “Well, let’s just say, I’ve never met a man who used power for good.”

I scoffed at him. “What makes you think it’ll be a man?”

He laughed as if what I had said was a joke. It was far from a joke. “Because women are too selfish to sacrifice themselves for someone else.” I heard the pure distrust he had for women in each word he spoke. It made my heart hurt.

We stayed quiet, staring at each other. I moved my eyes over his face. His eyes were sad, his lips turned down, and his jaw muscles were tense.

“Maybe you’re right,” I said. Ezra lowered his brows, looking at me curiously. “But I’m pretty sure you’re wrong.”

Ezra folded his arms over his chest. “You disagree?”

I shrugged my shoulders. “I don’t know, Ezra. I have faith in mankind. After all, you and I are going to Hell without greedy intentions.”

He made a steeple with his hands and touched his lips. I tilted my head, unsure again what he was thinking. “Are you sure about that?” he asked.

I shifted in my seat, unsure where this conversation was going. “What do you mean?”

He leaned forward, and a few gold strands fell over his strong cheekbones. “I sense a bit of regret in you.”

I jerked my head back as I was caught off guard. I didn’t think he’d say that. “Regret?”

“You’re going to Hell to save a friend.” I nodded. “Or are you going to Hell to ease your guilt?”

I narrowed my eyes, glaring at him. Yup, I totally wasn’t expecting that. “And what guilt do I have, Ezra?”

His lips turned up into a cocky smile. “You tell me.”

Was he right?

Sure, I regret not listening to Emerich when he said not to go on this last hunt, but who would go to Hell just to ease their guilt? That’s a bit excessive. But I do believe someone would go to Hell to save a friend.

Right?

I held up a hand to ward off the truth behind his words. “You don’t know me, Ezra. Not well enough to judge me like that, anyway.”

“You’re a strong fighter and damned skilled at throwing knives, but that isn’t enough to survive Hell.” What was he saying? I’m a trained jinn hunter. “I fear you’re weak here.” He pointed to his right temple. “That can make you weak here.” He brought his finger to his heart.

I stood up and pushed a pile of boxes at him. “If I’m so damn weak, then find someone else.” I was tired of everybody pointing at my weakness, telling me to hold back. Damn it. I need people to point out my strengths!

He caught the boxes before they slid off the table. Then, lightning-fast, he was on his feet and in front of me.

I formed fists and turned my head away from his prying eyes. I was breathing heavily, my chest rising and falling to the fast rhythm of my heartbeat. Ezra was close— too close. He had a clean, dangerous scent. I felt my knees tremble as his body heat seeped into me, and when he placed his finger under my chin, the shared heat and sensation thrilled me.

He gently turned my head, but I kept my eyes down. “Maeve,” he whispered, getting me to look at him. I allowed my eyes to wander, taking in his beauty. His sheer maleness overwhelmed me, and every instinct I had said he was different. I couldn’t put my finger on it. Still, there was something about him that was.... contrasting. I couldn’t quite figure him out. It was a feeling of lust mixed with a feeling of fear. Like a jinn, he was beautiful yet scary. There was something dangerous simmering under his cool façade. I wasn’t sure what it was, but I was captivated by that mysterious side of him. His eyes penetrated mine as if he were seeing into my soul. “I don’t want someone else,” he said.

[Blog Tour] The North Wind by Alexandria Warwick

The North Wind
Alexandria Warwick
(The Four Winds, #1)
Publication date: January 13th 2022
Genres: Fantasy, New Adult, Romance

Lush. Dark. Romantic. Introducing a newly reimagined tale written in the vein of Beauty and the Beast and Hades and Persephone.

Long before civilization, there were the gods. And before the gods, there was the earth, the celestial bodies, and air given flesh. They are the Anemoi—the Four Winds—and they have been banished to the four corners of the world.

Wren of Edgewood is no stranger to suffering. Her parents are gone. Survival is all she knows. For three hundred years, the land known as the Gray has been encased in ice, surrounded by a great barrier called the Shade, which protects the townsfolk from the Deadlands beyond.

But day by day, the Shade weakens.

Only one thing can stop the Shade’s fall: a mortal woman taken captive across the barrier, bound in wedlock to the dark god who reigns over the Deadlands. He is the North Wind, the Frost King, an immortal whose heart is said to be as frigid as the land he rules.

And the time has come for the Frost King to choose his bride.

The North Wind is a standalone, enemies-to-lovers fantasy romance, the first in a series sprinkled with Greek lore. Perfect for fans of Jennifer L. Armentrout, Laura Thalassa, and Scarlett St. Clair.

EXCERPT:

It’s as I’m smoothing the wrinkles from the white tablecloth that I hear it—the clop of hooves on stone.

The silence is thick enough to choke on.

The clustered women press closer, grabbing each other’s hands. No one utters a sound. Even their breathing has ceased. Elora’s gaze meets mine across the room.

I could do it. Take my sister’s hand, flee through the kitchen door in the back. The dark god would never know of Elora’s existence.

“Places,” Miss Millie hisses, motioning for the women to take their seats at the table. Suddenly, the air clangs with noise—shifting chairs and whispering cloth and the dreaded clop, clop, clop, closer and closer. Somewhere in the room, I hear a softly uttered, “Please.”

I’m halfway to Elora’s side when Miss Millie snags my arm. The woman’s fingernails bite painfully. I can’t pry them loose. “Let me go.” White rings Elora’s dark eyes, which are locked on the front door.

“It’s too late,” she breathes. Clumps of her gray-streaked hair stick to her round, sweaty face. The lines around her mouth deepen.

“It’s not. There’s still time. Lend us your horse. I’ll take your daughter with us. We’ll return once—”

Footsteps.

Miss Millie swings me around, shoves me into a corner as the front door opens. The hinges squeal like a mutilated animal. Around the table, the women flinch, shrinking back into their chairs as a gale bursts through the doorway, guttering half the lamps and plunging the room into near-darkness. I freeze against the back wall, mouth dry.

In steps a towering figure, etched black against the shadows. Cloaked, hooded, alone.

He has to stoop to enter the room, for the buildings are constructed with low slanted ceilings to conserve heat. When he straightens, the top of his head brushes the rafters, darkness coiling inside the cowl of his hood. Two pricks of brightness, the sheen of reflected light against his eyes, are all I see. I’m not sure of their color. His head turns slightly to the left—a brief perusal of his surroundings.

Miss Millie, bless her heart, shuffles forward. Terror has bleached her face white. “My lord?”

The sucking void that is his hood opening shifts in her direction. He lifts his hand. Someone gasps.

But he only pushes back his hood with a gloved hand, revealing a countenance of such agonizing beauty that I can only look at him for so long before I’m forced to turn away. And yet, only seconds pass before my attention returns, drawn by some unnamed compulsion to study him in greater detail.

[Blog Tour] Heart of the Impaler by Alexander Delacroix

Heart of the Impaler
Alexander Delacroix
Published by: Swoon Reads
Publication date: December 7th 2021
Genres: Historical, Young Adult

Alexander Delacroix’s darkly romantic debut Heart of the Impaler is perfect for fans of Kiersten White’s And I Darken.

Vlad Dracula has long lived in the shadows cast by his bloodthirsty father, the voivode, and his older brother, Mircea. Despite their cruelty, Vlad has yearned to prove himself worthy of the throne his whole life. In the cold halls of the voivode’s palace, Vlad can only rely on his cousin and closest friend, Andrei Musat.

When Vlad and Andrei meet Ilona Csáki, the daughter of an influential boyar, they each find themselves inextricably drawn to her. But then Ilona is betrothed to Mircea as part of a political alliance, and Vlad’s resentfulness of his brother begins to seethe into something far darker.

Ilona has no desire to marry the voivode’s eldest son, but love and marriage are the least of her worries. The royal family’s enemies have already tried to put an arrow through her back—and if anyone discovers her blossoming feelings for Andrei and Vlad, she may just wish they’d succeeded.

Beneath the shadow of impending war, the only battle that will be deadlier than the one for Ilona’s life will be the one for her heart.

EXCERPT:

Târgoviște, Winter 1442

THE SUN HADN’T SET, BUT THE MOON HOVERED OVER THE CUR- tea Domnească like a curious orange eye. It seemed almost as interested in the two boys’ antics as Ilona and the rest of their all-female audience. The boys unsheathed their Magyar long- swords, wiped the blades on their shirttails, and swiped the weapons experimentally through the air. Both paused to cast sidelong glances at the watching girls. The boyars’ daughters obliged their hopes with flirtatious laughter.

Ilona watched the girls lean close and whisper to one another behind their hands. They were as duplicitous as the courtiers in Transylvania and twice as vicious. Ilona’s family had been guests of Vlad Dracul’s court for only a few short weeks, but in that time she’d learned to carefully guard her thoughts and her words.

Something tugged at her embroidered sleeve. Ilona wiped the scowl off her face and looked down at her younger sister.

“Which one is the voivode’s son?” Gizela asked.

“The shorter one.”

“What’s his name?”

“Honestly, Gizi, we’ve been here for weeks. He’s the one who’s named after his father. Vlad. Vlad Dracula.”

Gizela giggled. “Dracula. That means ‘little devil.’ I think I’ll marry him. I want to be a prince’s wife.”

“If you want to be a prince’s wife, you’ll have to marry someone else.”

Gizela frowned. “Why?”

“Because the voivode’s eldest son—Mircea—is next in line for Wallachia’s throne.”

“Then I’ll marry him.”

“He’s eighteen. I don’t think he’s interested in seven-year- olds.”

Gizela thrust out her lower lip and petulantly crossed her arms. “I’m nearly eight and very mature for my age!”

Ilona laughed, which drew the attention of the boyars’ daughters and the sword-wielding boys. Vlad clearly decided Ilona’s laughter was for him; he grinned and bowed, his wavy hair falling over his eyes.
He wasn’t heart-stoppingly handsome, Ilona thought, but he wasn’t unattractive either. And he was funny. The other day she had watched from a corner as he mocked the boyars behind their backs. He had mastered Grand Boyar Golescu’s scowl and Boyar Văcărescu’s pompous strut. He didn’t fear any of them, although perhaps he should have.

Vlad Dracul II was a powerful voivode, Wallachia’s princely warlord, but the boyars were powerful landowners with soldiers and alliances of their own. Dracul only maintained power by keeping a slim majority of the aristocracy on his side.

Up to this point, Ilona had only exchanged a few words with Vlad in passing, so she didn’t know why she blushed now at his unexpected attention.

Vlad’s tall, quiet companion stared too, but when Ilona looked back, he quickly lowered his gaze. He was Vlad’s cousin Andrei. The boyars’ daughters had been whispering his and Vlad’s names ever since they entered the courtyard. Two of the three girls now stared daggers at Ilona.

Despite what they might have thought, Ilona wasn’t seeking Vlad’s attention—she had no interest in climbing the social ladder. But when he addressed his audience, his gaze lingered on her.

“Andrei and I are training to be knights,” he said. “We’ve already fought Wallachia’s enemies at the border, and the next time they dare to set their worthless feet on our soil, we’ll be there to stop them again. Isn’t that right, Andrei?”

He clapped a hand on Andrei’s shoulder, and Andrei nodded.

“I’m already a member of Sigismund’s Order of the Dragon,” Vlad said. “I’ve been preparing my entire life to lead Wallachia’s armies.”

The boyars’ daughters responded with appropriate nods and smiles. Vlad beamed and Andrei blushed.

“These are sharpened,” Vlad said, brandishing his sword. “One false move and Andrei or I could lose a hand.”

A pretty girl with a long braid falling down her back pre- tended to swoon into one of her companions’ arms. It earned another coveted grin from Vlad. Ilona bit her lower lip. The pretty girl was Golescu’s daughter. Grand Boyar Golescu was possibly the most powerful boyar in Wallachia. This, in and of itself, made his daughter particularly dangerous.

“Are you ready?” Vlad asked, returning his attention to Andrei.

Andrei didn’t seem as enthusiastic as Vlad, but he mumbled an acknowledgment. Vlad moved into a ready stance. Neither boy wore protective armor; both had stripped off their fur-lined coats and now shivered in their linen tunics.

This exhibition was foolish. An adult would put an imme- diate end to it, but all the adults were in the banquet hall. Ilona knew she should say something, but fear of how the other girls would react kept her quiet. She was already enough of an out- sider here at court.

The boys bowed and crossed their blades.

“Începe!” Vlad shouted. His sword met Andrei’s, and a metallic clang rippled off the courtyard walls. Vlad—clearly the more aggressive—lunged at his cousin, forcing Andrei to hastily swat Vlad’s blade aside. Undeterred, Vlad came at him again. And again. And again . . . It took Andrei seven tries to finally catch Vlad’s blade against his own spade-ended cross guard.

“Good one,” Vlad grunted.

Andrei nodded. He shrugged Vlad’s ringing weapon aside, and the mock battle resumed. Strike. Block. Strike.

Ilona again considered creeping back to the banquet hall to find her father, but self-doubt held her in place. Vlad and Andrei were skilled. Maybe they did this often. Maybe they knew how to handle a sword without harming each other. Vlad was better, but it was a friendly match. Nobody was going to get hurt.

Despite her worry, the longer she watched, the more impressed Ilona became. Vlad played swords the way Ilona’s father played rithmomachy—a mathematical board game similar to chess, but far more complex. Like Ilona’s father, Vlad used just the right amount of strategy and reckless aggression to intimidate his opponent. It was working on Andrei. Step by step, Vlad forced his cousin backward.

And then Andrei surprised everyone. He struck Vlad’s swooping blade with a heavy blow that nearly sent it flying; Vlad fought to maintain his grasp. One of the boyars’ daughters cheered, and Vlad’s jaw tightened.

Ilona saw a change in Vlad’s eyes. They grew darker. His swordplay became less restrained.

Gizela clapped. “This is exciting! Who do you think will win?”

Ilona pushed her sister behind her. It was time to go for help. She stepped toward the nearest corridor, but she was too late. Andrei slipped on a patch of icy snow and Vlad’s razor-edged blade carved a crimson path down the left side of his face.

Blood.

Everywhere.

The boyars’ daughters shrieked, Andrei dropped his weapon, and Vlad staggered backward with a horrified look on his face. Ilona didn’t remember moving, wasn’t sure how she ended up between Andrei and Vlad, but sticky blood oozed between Ilona’s fingers where she pressed her handkerchief against Andrei’s face.

Andrei stared at her. Behind her, Vlad stammered, “I . . . I . . .”

She looked at Vlad. He looked away.

“WHAT’S GOING ON OUT HERE?”

The words thundered off the courtyard walls. Vlad dropped his sword, and Ilona jumped and turned her head toward the voice.

A fierce man with a drooping mustache swooped toward her and Andrei. The man wore a red velvet cap and an ermine-fringed coat. A dragon-shaped medallion bounced against his chest.

Vlad’s father. Vlad Dracul the Second, Prince of Wallachia.

The voivode forcefully pulled Ilona’s hand away from Andrei’s face and examined the damage inflicted by the younger Vlad’s sword. Ilona crept back to Gizela, reaching for her sister’s hand, but drew back when she saw the blood on her own.

The voivode turned away from Andrei. He saw the dropped swords and kicked them across the cobbled courtyard.

“I asked what’s going on here.”

His words were for Vlad, but Vlad didn’t answer.

The voivode glared at Andrei. “Find Raluca. Tell her to clean that up.”

Andrei nodded and wiped the back of one hand across his face, which only made his wound look worse. He ducked past the voivode and disappeared down a corridor.

Dracul turned his attention back to his son. “Is this what I pay that tutor a small fortune for? Train you to strut like a cockerel in a henhouse to impress a few empty-headed girls?”

His hand flew out, and Ilona bit back a startled cry as his open palm met the side of Vlad’s face. The slap rang across the courtyard. Vlad staggered but didn’t make a sound.

“Come with me!”

The son fell into obedient step behind the father, and the voivode’s bodyguards closed in around them as they exited the courtyard. The silence that followed was uncomfortable, but not as uncomfortable as what came next.

“You’re Nicholas Csáki’s granddaughters.”

Ilona turned. The girl with the braid stared at her, arms crossed, a smirk on her face.

“We are.”

“He was vajda of Transylvania.”

“Yes.”

“And your uncle Ladislaus ruled after him.”

“You know a great deal about our family. I can’t claim the same about yours.”

The braided girl smiled. “I make it my business to know everything about any family that thinks it’s good enough to worm its way into the voivode’s court, but even in Wallachia the Csáki name is famous. Famous for suffering history’s most humiliating defeat.”

Gizela stiffened and frowned, mirroring Ilona’s own actions. The braided girl saw this and sneered.

“Your family was shamed during the Peasant Revolt. You’re the laughingstock of all Transylvania.”

One of the girl’s companions—a tall, gaunt girl with too-angular features and too-shrewd eyes—snickered at the vicious comment.

“We’re richer and more important than any of you,” Gizela said hotly. “You don’t know what you’re talking about!”

Ilona bumped Gizela with her elbow, and her sister glared at her.

“Ow, Ilona! What was that for?”

“Ilona?” the braided girl said. “What a pretty name! I’m Daciana. This is my cousin, Sorina.”

She gestured toward her tall, unattractive companion. Her other companion, a round-faced, hazel-eyed girl, cleared her throat.

“And this is Magdalena.”

The third girl had friendlier features than the others and looked uncomfortable about what was happening, but she couldn’t feel anywhere near as uncomfortable as Ilona did.

“It’s such a pleasure to meet all of you,” Ilona said, forcing her words through clenched teeth. “But as stimulating as this conversation is, Gizela and I must be going.”

“Of course,” Daciana said. “Naturally you wish to be at the banquet to get a good seat for the big announcement.”

“What announcement?”

“Oh, my! You don’t know!” Daciana turned to her compan- ions. “The poor dear! She doesn’t know!”

“What announcement?” Ilona repeated, clenching her teeth again.

Daciana’s smug smile grew larger. “Tut, tut. I wouldn’t want to ruin the surprise.”

“You’re just jealous!” Gizela said. “Jealous that Vlad likes Ilona more than he likes you!”

That comment struck a nerve. “Jealous?” Daciana spat. “Jealous of a pair of paupers who wouldn’t have a crust of bread on their plates if not for the voivode’s charity? Your family was flung out of Transylvania like a chamber pot emptied into a gutter. Thrown out like slop to a swine!”

Gizela glared and Ilona pressed her lips tightly together as Daciana and Sorina flipped their hair and strode away. Mag- dalena hesitantly followed. Ilona remained rooted to the spot until the boyars’ daughters and their mocking laughter faded.

“Don’t pay them any attention,” Gizela said. A fierce look darkened her seven-year-old face. “They’re just jealous because they’re not as pretty or as smart as you.”

“You’re the smart, pretty one, madárka. Smart and pretty like Mother.”

It was still painful to mention their mother, but the compli- ment brought a smile to Gizela’s face. Ilona smoothed back her sister’s long dark hair. Unlike Ilona, who looked far too much like their father, Gizela possessed their mother’s grace and beauty. Perhaps that was why Gizela had always been Father’s favorite.

“Do you think they’ll have chimney cakes at the voivode’s banquet?” Gizela asked.

“I hope so. It seems like forever since I’ve eaten a good kürtőskalacs.”

“Last Christmas, Mama let me have as many as I wanted.”

Ilona felt a stab in her heart. That was enough talk about their dead mother.

“Come on, madárka. We need to find Father.”

She straightened her black skirt and realized her hand was still sticky with Andrei’s blood. She would have to do some- thing about that before they returned to the voivode’s great hall. Father would never forgive her if she disgraced him by showing up unpresentable.

Alliances. To him, everything was about forming alliances. First impressions—especially bad ones—could undo his efforts to restore his lost honor by making a place for himself in Wallachia. To that end, Ilona’s father could be downright ruthless.

Like Daciana. Ilona already hated that girl! Daciana knew about alliances, and if Ilona was going to survive in Dracul’s court, she would need to form a few alliances of her own. It was what her mother would have done. The question was, who would Ilona ally herself with, and how would she do it?

In Wallachia, as in Transylvania, survival depended on such choices.

Chapter 1

Duke Montague Marshall squinted into the harsh rays of the sun as they beamed with a strobe-like effect through his front windshield. Behind the wheel of his silver Toyota RAV4, he looked at the dashboard clock. Ten minutes to arrival.

“Nice up here,” Fiddler said, looking around. “Lots of trees.”

Duke felt no need to reply to his riding companion’s inane comment about the dense pines and spruce trees of the Superior National Forest. The forest, covering 3.9 million acres of land in Minnesota, also had about 2,000 lakes around the Superior National Forest and Boundary Waters region between the United States and Canada.

He looked in the rearview mirror at the vehicle following them. Five minutes to arrival.

“Run down the Monday-morning setup for me again,” Duke said.

“Assembly takes place in a green, industrial-type shed to the right past another shed-like main office with an awning and signage. They’ll be having their bullshit, Monday-morning meeting. Every fucking Monday the heads and general labor have a bull session. Donuts. Coffee. That kind of thing.”

Focusing on the task, Duke said, “We’re sure everyone will be there? No one in the quarry yet?”

Fiddler shook his head, his longish hair pulled back today. “Nah. Just the two places. Main office with the awning and the big green shed next to it.”

Not really worried about how things would go down, Duke told him to cut the noise once Fiddler started chattering about his planned trip to Turks and Caicos.

They’d arrived. Granger’s Quarry, a trillion-dollar shithole.

As they drove down a small gravel hill, Duke’s eyes roamed the parking lot. Relieved to spot the particular vehicle they needed, he pointed to it before slowly pulling up to the front door of the Granger’s Quarry office. He pressed the hatch button and got out, followed by Fiddler, and watched two more men on his team unload their own vehicle right behind them. They each grabbed a cheap AR15, all loaded with 30 round mags of 5.56 mm ammunition. One hundred twenty bullets should do the trick.

They closed the back ends of the vehicles, and Duke pointed to Thing 5 and then to the black F150 Ford truck they’d passed in the parking lot. Thing 5—or Alpha, as he was really known—was the number-five guy on Duke’s team and not yet deserving a personal pronoun. On Duke’s crew, a name had to be earned, but he was confident that Thing 5 knew what to do. Next, Duke’s focus turned to Thing 6, or Bravo. He pointed Bravo toward the front steps of the office and said, “Not until you hear me first.”

Thing 6 nodded as Duke and Fiddler headed to the green shed for the weekly BS meeting. Today, at least one of them will have something real to gripe about. The large industrial, metal shed next to the office had an eighteen-foot garage door open to the September elements. Duke could hear someone talking inside, so he raised his fist to stop Fiddler and quickly peeked inside. Sure enough, maybe fifteen guys sat in there, listening to some asshole at the front, yakking away—probably Chris Granger.

He pulled his head back and nodded at Fiddler. “Looks good. Here we go.” They moved their heads around the corner but held their weapons back. Duke yelled out, “Clyde!” One head turned around, and Duke recognized the face. They had the right guy.

After that, he and Fiddler walked in, raised their semiautomatic rifles, and opened fire. Bam. Bam. Bam. Bam. Easy. The meeting broke up as body after body flew and went down in fast order with a bit of screaming, upturned chairs, and pointless running and ducking. Nothing unexpected.

Duke registered Clyde taking cover behind a large steel drum canister, and once he’d made sure all the other fourteen were either dead or nearly dead, he finally rounded the corner of the drum and set eyes on his final prey. Clyde Hinton, age eighteen, was squirreled into a ball with shaking hands covering his face, his young body cowering for cover.

“Fucking little asshole,” Duke said, pointing his rifle at Clyde’s chest. “You’re one lucky bastard, you know that? You listen hard now to what I got to say, kid.” He dropped the point of the gun to his side. “Open your eyes!”

Clyde did as instructed.

Duke leaned his face closer to the boy and hissed, “Run. Run far and run fast, Ringo. Don’t call the cops with that cell phone in your pocket. You touch it, and I’ll know. Then you’re dead for sure.”

Clyde’s eyes opened wider, and his body jerked as a few more pops echoed through the loud acoustics of the shed. Duke inched closer, his breath now directly warming Clyde’s face. “I know where you live, Ringo. I know your daddy is Mr. Sherman Hinton too.” Duke reached into his pocket and pulled out a piece of paper, which he thrust in Clyde’s face and ordered, “Read it!”

Clyde looked at it as Duke explained, “It’s a receipt from a fucking gun shop in Cloquet for a $550 piece-of-shit AR15 that has your name on it. You bought the gun. You did this crime, motherfucker.”

“I, I…” Clyde stammered.

Duke ripped the piece of paper out of Clyde’s hands and stuffed it back into his own pocket. “The original is in the office. Right by the time clock and your miserable name. You should collect it and whatever else you find in there before you run. But don’t worry; I’ll give you time to leave here alive—as long as you don’t use your phone. But remember, we’ll be watching.”

“We good?” Duke yelled at Fiddler who was leaning over, picking up a few shell casings.

“Good.”

Duke punched the nose of his weapon into young Clyde’s crotch, who pointlessly dropped his hands to cover his balls. “Run, Ringo. Cut and run. Do as I say, and don’t you ever look back. You call the cops and your old man, Sherman, burns alive. Got it?”

Duke walked away, passing a few bodies covered in bloody flannel. The distinct aroma of gun powder, blood, and death filled his nostrils and flashed him back to other equally satisfying missions. This one, though, was nothing like the others.

For many reasons.

Author Bio:

Annabelle Lewis—a pseudonym for the author—lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Regrettably? Perhaps. She still believes she’s a Texan even though the math no longer supports that. Nor her birthplace. Nor her residence. No offense, Minnesota. You’ve got your good points too, but only about six months of the year.

In her youth, Annabelle was a complete failure. Ask anyone who knew her. Any of her teachers and family would tell you this. High school graduation was a sad day for all when Annabelle walked proudly off the high school stage, her thoughts consumed with boys, beer, and after-parties, and later into the arms of her parents. Her father’s laughter and singular remark? “I didn’t think you’d make it. Get a job at the post office, they have a good retirement plan.”

A high bar and words to live by, but Annabelle wanted more. She needed to flunk out of college too. But damn, she sure did have a good time. Trivial arrest records not-withstanding, it was a growth period for our girl. And if you look closely, you’ll see a bit of what was to come when she majored in criminal justice. Her lifelong aspiration was to become a judge. Hmm.

For better or worse, Annabelle didn’t graduate from college but did find gainful employment and a fulfilling career. This path ended when she became a mom. Married to her wonderful George, who to this day can hardly remember an actual proposal, Annabelle finally became a mother. She didn’t have a clue how hard she would need to work to keep those self-imposed requirements of Downey-fresh, iron-pressed sheets, home-baked meals, and mom-of-the-year awards arriving. She composed a small self-affirmation song and made her children sing it to her for money. She was a very good mom.

After clearing the largest hurdles of motherhood and regrettably, begrudgingly, and not-without-tears, launching her children onto the world, she looked around and realized she had a lot to say. Picking up a laptop, she got to work.

Annabelle spends her days continuing to tackle the challenges of motherhood, for both her humans and canines. She also writes. And reads. And cleans. And cooks. And bakes. And cleans again. She also supports her husband, George, in an administrative capacity for their small business. She’s in charge of payroll and cuts George’s checks. This leads to no marital acrimony.

In the beginning, with the blank page staring at her and possibly in a hostile mood after being literally mauled by a dog and by the world in general, she had an idea. What if she could wield a force of good upon unsuspecting evil-doers? What if she had the resources to get the job done without dealing with committee and anyone else’s whiney-ass opinions?

It was gold. It took off. Annabelle sat down and began to write and couldn’t stop. To date, having written over a million words in the Carrows Family Chronicles and her second series on the Boston Clairvoyants, several items have become quite clear. Annabelle had a lot to say. Annabelle really enjoys writing. And although she hates all things technology, she begrudgingly pounds her head on her desk daily as obstacles are thrown in her path. Almost a hero.

Since entering her world of make-believe, she has rebelled against all intrusion of real-world responsibilities. Her house is a mess, but she tries. Her family is fed, but more often than not, on takeout. She vows to shower every day, but no, it’s a vow she’ll never keep. Her friends are neglected, but not in her heart.

Read her mordacious blog! Read her books! Follow her on social platforms! Sign up for her newsletter! These are all good things. What are you waiting for? Jump into bed with Annabelle. She’s having a swell time. You should join her.

“You’re seriously going to drive all the way to Vermont to spend Christmas with family you haven’t seen in years?”

Spencer’s voice was so thick with sarcasm Roxanne couldn’t decide which part of what he’d said offended him the most.

Her work bestie slumped dramatically against the high wall of her cubicle, fanning at himself. The perfection of his coiffed hair and meticulously starched clothes might have given the impression that Spencer Chen was impervious to the indignities of human emotion, but the expression on his face said plainly he was not. At the present, he was wearing the most severe of his trademark histrionic faces: upper lip drawn back to expose a row of pearly white teeth, nostrils flared, expertly sculpted eyebrows arched. The look said he hated everything that had just come out of his mouth.

All of it.

Don’t encourage him. Roxanne bit her lip and willed herself to stay silent. When Spencer got on a roll, it was best to just let him tire himself out. Working in the fashion industry had earned her a closet full of designer labels and, along with them, the kid gloves necessary to handle the drama queens in her life, including Spencer. Usually, Roxanne enjoyed his dramatic reactions to everyday happenings—so long as they weren’t directed at her.

She opened her mouth to speak, but Spencer wasn’t finished.

“In a log cabin,” he added, stabbing his index finger upward to punctuate each word. A shudder passed through his body as he dropped his palm over his heart. He was so spun up he actually looked faint.

“I am.” Roxanne drew her response out and bit her lip. Maybe if she said the words slowly, they wouldn’t spin him back up.

Spencer closed his eyes and sucked his teeth, still fanning.

She sighed. “It’s not as bad as you’re making it sound, though, Spence. Seriously.”

“Oh, honey.” Spencer’s eyes snapped open with an exaggerated pop. “It absolutely is. You’re Divine, remember? Being divine isn’t just a job; it’s a lifestyle. And there’s nothing cute about spending the biggest holiday of the year in the sticks.”

[Blog Tour] Wild For Me by Tam DeRudder Jackson

Wild For Me
Tam DeRudder Jackson
(Balefire Series, #3)
Publication date: November 18th 2021
Genres: Adult, New Adult, Romance

Dakota

Annabelle Stewart, all tight leather skirt and hot lace panties, thundered into my life for one night after a rock show and calmly drove away the next day. She should have been like any other one-night stand I’ve had over the last ten years touring with Balefire. But she wasn’t. At odd moments, I catch myself thinking about her, wondering if I made as big an impression on her as she did on me.

Then I walk into the rehearsal for our drummer’s wedding, and who’s standing with the bride? The hottie who keeps me awake with thoughts of our one night together. Beautiful, smart, and sassy as hell, Annabelle sets me on fire with her kisses and leaves me hanging. But I’ve got plans for her.

Annabelle

I never expected to see him again. Two years after hooking up with Dakota Perri after a Balefire concert, I’d convinced myself that night was a fantasy. But the way he looks at me during Jack and Clio’s wedding, like he remembers every second of our one-night stand, lights me up. Too bad I blew it.

Then I score a management internship with the band, an opportunity guaranteed to land me a scholarship with a top graduate program—if I don’t earn a reputation for sleeping my way to success. Which is a problem. I see Dakota every day. Every time we’re together, the sparks fly faster and hotter. If I want to achieve my goals, I have to resist him. But how can I resist a man as panty-meltingly hot as Dakota Perri when he says he’s wild for me?

Author Bio:

Tam DeRudder Jackson is the author of the paranormal romance Talisman Series and the contemporary romance Balefire Series. Her favorite “room” in her house is her back patio where she dreams up stories of romance and risk. When she’s not writing her latest paranormal or contemporary romance, you can usually find her driving around with the top down in her convertible or carving turns on the slopes of the local ski hill. The mom of two grown sons, Tam likes to travel, attend rock concerts, watch football and soccer, and visit old car shows with her husband. She lives in the mountains of northwest Wyoming where she spends most of her free time trying to read all the books. Her TBR piles are threatening to take over her office, and she’s fine with that.
