Mordizan
Alyssa Roat
(The Wraithwood Trilogy, #2)
Publication date: March 15th 2022
Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult

The bane of Mordred, the son of Mordizan, and a millennia-old prophecy—together they may provide what Brinnie needs to defeat the world of magic’s greatest threat.

More than a year has passed since Brinnie left Wraithwood, never expecting to see it again. But when Mordred captures her sister, she is thrust back into the world of magic. She flees to Wraithwood, where she learns of a prophecy located in the dark wizard capital of Mordizan that reveals the identity of “Mordred’s bane,” something that could destroy Mordred for good.

Brinnie agrees to a rendezvous with Mordred to exchange herself for her sister, going undercover at Mordizan as a spy to find the prophecy and Mordred’s bane. There, she weaves a complicated web of secrets, lies, and tenuous friendships. She makes an unexpected ally in Marcus Vorath, son of the Master of Mordizan, who fears the implications of Mordred’s growing power. But in Mordizan, friends and foes may be one and the same.

In the midst of court intrigue, battle, ominous new depths to her power, and searching for Mordred’s bane, Brinnie struggles to draw the lines. How far is she willing to go to destroy Mordred? And how much of herself is she willing to give up along the way?

EXCERPT:

Something thudded behind her. Brinnie pivoted, heart sinking as the door swung open and the man stepped out. He pulled a long, glowing blade out of his jacket and balanced it on his hand.

It pointed directly at Brinnie and Maddy.

He looked at Maddy and grinned. “I’ve found you, shadow walker.”

Oh, no.

Maddy’s head cocked. “What? I’m—”

“Come on.” Brinnie grabbed her wrist and towed her in a headlong run toward Building E.

Their feet slapped the concrete in a spastic rhythm as Maddy nearly tripped. “What are you doing?” she squeaked.

“He thinks you’re me.” Brinnie dragged her around the corner of Building E and slid to a halt in front of the chain-link fence. She shoved Maddy forward. “Climb it.”

“I can’t—”

“Just do it.”

Brinnie spun, not waiting to see if Maddy obeyed. She settled into a defensive position, facing the man as he rounded the corner. “You’re chasing the wrong person!”

He stopped, scanning the fence, the ground, adjusting his grip on the knife. “Don’t play games with me, shadow walker. Show yourself.”

The fence rattled behind her. If she could stall him long enough, maybe Maddy could get away, and then she could make a run for it as well, using invisibility to her advantage. “And why would I do that?” she taunted. “I think I have the upper hand here.”

“I disagree.” He reached inside his jacket, revealing another sheath. “Do it, or your human friend dies.”

Brinnie glanced at Maddy, now over the fence, frozen and staring. Run, you idiot. “She doesn’t know. You’ll die, too.”

“I don’t believe you.”

She faced him squarely, even though he couldn’t see her, putting herself between him and Maddy. “It’s the truth.”

“I guess we’ll find out.” He flicked a small knife out of the sheath.

Great. Throwing knives. Did they all take the same how-to-throw-knives classes? Brinnie braced, ready to shield Maddy with her own body if she had to. She’d taken a knife before.

And nearly died.

The man pulled back his arm.

And from somewhere behind Brinnie, a ball of fire blasted toward him.
