Aloha With Love
Lindy Miller with Terence Brody
Published by: Rosewind Books
Publication date: July 13th 2021
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Soon to be a motion picture.
From the screenwriter of Rescuing Madison and
A Lesson in Romance on Hallmark

“[A] charming romance. Miller and Brody do a masterful job of pacing and plotting, while creating a hero and heroine readers will easily relate to. This sweet, G-rated contemporary should draw in Hallmark Channel devotees in droves.” ~Publishers Weekly

After a tough week that includes losing a big job opportunity and being dumped by her long-term boyfriend, Jenna Burke receives word that her beloved Aunt May passed away.

Traveling back to her Hawaiian hometown for the reading of the will, Jenna discovers she and her sister have inherited May’s dilapidated Victorian home on desirable beachfront land. The sisters can do whatever they want with the property, but there’s one catch: the house must be renovated before it can be sold, and Jenna has to oversee the work. Their Aunt even stipulated the contractor for the job—Ben Fletcher—who has a gift for making things beautiful again. He also has another skill: driving Jenna crazy.

Jenna vows to sell the property the moment the job is done. But as Aunt May’s broken old house starts to feel like home again, Jenna is torn between the life she’s been chasing in the city, and the one she’d left behind.

Guest Post:

Honestly, I don’t read a ton of romance. I skim a lot, for research, and I follow the genre, but my personal reading tastes run a little darker. Since my books have been adapted to film, I do, however, watch a lot of romance—particularly of the Hallmark variety, and sweet seasonals. One of my current favorites is The Princess Switch on Netflix. That tends to play on a loop in the background while I write.

[Blog Tour] Generation of Vipers by Maria Ann Green

Generation of Vipers
Maria Ann Green
Publication date: June 18th 2021
Genres: Adult, Gothic, Psychological, Thriller

Rosabella Moore-Davis has just moved her husband halfway across the world, with a spur of the moment purchase–a glorious gothic mansion–while on vacation in France. It was love at first sight, and somehow she knew it was more than just some huge house; it was meant to be her home.

But not all things that are meant to be end happily ever after.

Rosabella soon finds herself waking in the middle of the night from more than just wind and creaking pipes. In the dark she discovers ghostly figures looking up into her windows from outside, rooms and treasures previously hidden for centuries, creeping crawling guests, and too many dark shadows lunging toward her. And still, somehow, instead of screaming and running away she researches, choosing knowledge over fear, and learns more about the house and the history of this place she loves so much.

Only when she stumbles into the past, meeting an aristocrat hiding enough deadly secrets to take down the patriarchy, does Rosabella start to regret her choices. And after having come this far, she worries it’s too late to turn back and save herself from a house that has more skeletons in its vast amount of closet space than anyone expected.

Rosabella isn’t the fleeing type, but she’s not sure she’ll survive the fight. Especially against a place with so many stories buried beneath it, burned into every fiber of the edifice, a house with a portal to dark places and troubles that shouldn’t be stirred up.

Generation of Vipers is a mix of crimson peak and Mike Flanagan’s Haunting of Hill House, with elements of Marisha Pessl’s Night Film mixed throughout.

If you like dark thrillers that border on horror, gothic elements, and deliciously dark twists that will keep you guessing, then Generation of Vipers might be your next favorite book. It’ll keep you reading just one more page all night long, too afraid to turn out the light and go to sleep.

It appeals to lovers of suspenseful plots, all things dark like thrillers and horrors, stories with murder and mayhem, dark romance elements, fans of American Horror Story, Shirley Jackson, Gilian Flynn, Ruth Ware, Tana French, J.A. Konrath, and the Timothy Blake Series by Jack Heath.

I asked the author:

I would like to know if the author has any supernatural encounter stories to share.

You know, I absolutely wish I did. My favorite movies – and actually my comfort movies that I watch when I am feeling down are all horror movies, and most of them are supernatural, like the Insidious movies, and the Paranormal Activities. I absolutely believe in the supernatural and I wish I had a great story to share of something I’ve encountered. I am a writer and I could make one up, but I won’t! My best friend and I do want to go on a road trip to haunted places as well as places associated with true crime, so maybe I’ll have a new answer after this summer!

Author Bio:

Maria, a badass USA Today and internationally bestselling indie author, lives in Minnesota despite the frozen winters. Actually, she prefers snow drifts and icicles over summer and all that sweat running everywhere. She writes about bitches, breakups, and bloodbaths – not in any particular order. She lives with her husband and little family, which includes a few lazy cats who make great lap warmers. You can usually find her whishing that she lived in a secret cabin in the woods where she could be a hermit reading and writing all of the time. Instead she lives the suburban life where she pretends to her neighbors and the other moms around that she doesn’t swear like a sailor, have hidden tattoos, and loves a good bottle of wine. She absolutely believes in unicorns and ghosts and hopes vampires and monsters are real too. She’s a coffee-in-the-morning and alcohol-in-the-evening kind of person, preferably with a nap in between. Maria prefers cats over dogs, books over people, and late nights over early mornings. She probably shouldn’t talk to anyone until she’s had her first cup of coffee, extra sugar. And if you ever want to hang out with her, you’ll have to be game for a horror movie or just a quick run to target for two (hundred) little things. Also, you couldn’t pay her to be in her twenties again; Thirties is where it’s at. She’s a creative, mouthy, introverted, proud bisexual, highly-sensitive INFJ, chronic pain spoonie warrior, Slytherpuff, dork with a sweet-tooth.

Maria devours books, reading mostly in bed or listening to audiobooks in the car. Writing has been one of her passions for pretty much her whole life. So creativity is a necessity for her, always. After working in the mental health field for almost a decade, she’s now living her dream as a stay-at-home writer, kiddo wrangler, professional snuggler, and constantly-tired-person. When it comes to her writing, she specializes in dark and twisted thrillers or gritty, angsty contemporary romances. But no matter the genre, she always prefers writing deeply flawed characters with dysfunctional relationships. She’s pretty sure the whole “unlikable character” thing is a conspiracy because every character she loves have been labeled this way. Ridiculous. And because of this, she’s pretty much found it impossible to write anything without at least a little mayhem.

Maria was once told she painted with her words, and that phrase stuck with her – because writing really is an art, and good stories are true masterpieces. She’s always trying to grow and improve in her craft, shooting for a masterpiece of her own someday. And she plans to write forever because writing gives Maria the ability to disappear into new worlds and create people within twisting plots, all from the comfort of her couch. She will always believe that though not every story is for her, and her stories aren’t for everyone, every story has a reader.

[Blog Tour] The Weight of the Sky by Caroline Schley

The Weight of the Sky
Caroline Schley
Publication date: May 20th 2021
Genres: Contemporary, Young Adult

Speak meets Gossip Girl in this searing contemporary Young Adult novel where the most courageous three words a teenage girl will ever have to say are, “I need help.”

But fifteen-year-old Chris Miller is far from courageous. She does nothing when her best friend is sent to juvenile detention for a crime Chris knows she didn’t commit. She stays quiet as her mother steamrolls her into a scholarship program at St. Catherine’s Prep for her sophomore year. She acquiesces when her new friends introduce ‘drinkstagram’ at their sleepovers. Chris understands that quiet insecurity isn’t the most valiant approach to life, but it gets her through the day unscathed. Until she’s sexually assaulted.

In the aftermath, Chris’s fragile coping mechanisms crumble, alongside her grades and her tenuous happiness. When Chris is forced to volunteer at an afterschool program to maintain her scholarship, she finds herself catapulted back to the very neighborhood she has been struggling to escape. When her family is thrust into the crosshairs of a gang war, she discovers just how much damage her silence can cause. Ultimately, she must decide if she will continue to stay quiet as others call the shots and remain a victim, or if she can forge the strength to stand up, declare the truth and call herself a survivor.

Trigger Warning: This story contains content that may be sensitive for some readers including sexual assault and drug/alcohol consumption

I asked the author:

How do you approach the writing of sensitive topics (sexual assault, etc.).

When I started writing ‘The Weight of the Sky’ in the spring of 2018, I was convinced that it would be a love story. My main character would have no flaws, meet-cute with a respectful young man, and live happily ever after. She was perfect, so nothing bad should ever happen to her, right? Right.

But, as it turned out, it was also so, SO boring.

About 40K words into a draft of this story, the #metoo movement exploded in the United States. It was a watershed moment in history for women’s empowerment, with women coming forward by the thousands to discuss the impact of sexual assault experiences they had suffered in their teenage years. By the time Dr. Christine Blasey Ford was testifying in front of Congress, there was a thread of this #metoo culture woven deeply into both my consciousness and my storyline.

As my plot developed, I hoped it might tell one small version of a vital story that had clearly been underreported for several decades. As I researched, I developed some dictates in order to treat the subject with the respect it deserved. Find my most important lessons below.

1. Give your audience a heads up. Though the sexual assault scene is a turning point in my novel, at first I wasn’t sure how much to include about it in the synopsis. To help me decide, I polled the #writingcommunity on Twitter.

The responses were overwhelming.

For survivors of sexual assault, a heads-up isn’t just a courtesy, it’s a cornerstone. After carefully reading through the long comment thread, I put the assault clearly in the blurb AND added a trigger warning.

Your readers deserve to know exactly what they are getting themselves into.

2. Own it. Early on in my writing, I learned that on-page sexual assault scenes are a hard sell in the traditional publishing world.

I tried to ‘write around’ the assault for months. But I couldn’t do it. I decided to write the book the way I heard it in my mind and felt it in my heart and see what happened next. I loved the authentic story that developed. Eventually, this ability to write the story exactly how I wanted was a big part of the reason I published independently. I get to own my words, my ideas and my characters in the face of all the sensitive and difficult themes they come up against. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

3. Be prepared for uncomfortable questions. In the weeks before publication, I got cold feet about the book several times, wracked with anxiety considering the reality of having this story out in the world with my name stamped in large letters across the front cover.

One afternoon at the school where I teach, I griped to a friend during a bout of despair, “I mean, what if I publish this story and my students start to come to me with experiences of sexual assault? I don’t know how to handle that. That would be terrible.”

My friend took a moment before he answered. “Well, actually…wouldn’t that be kind of amazing?”

The statement went off like a flash of lightning in my mind. In the end, the whole point of writing about sensitive topics is to encourage difficult conversations. Be prepared to engage in the conversations that will provide these delicate, difficult issues space to grow in the public conscious.

I asked the author:

Favourite Memories from the Library

I grew up in a small town, so the library was my window to the world. Books allowed me to visit new places both real and fiction, to escape and live a whole other life for a while. One of the first book series that got me hooked was Susan Cooper’s The Dark is Rising. I also enjoyed the Narnia series by C.S. Lewis. When I was in sixth grade, I read The Talisman by Stephen King, and it remains one of my favorite books. After that I checked out every Stephen King book available in our little library. I think that probably worried my parents, but they tolerated my newfound love of horror. To this day, he is one of my favorite authors.

Reading taught me most of what I know about writing, about how to build worlds and invite a reader in. I was lucky to have access to a library and to be able to travel to other worlds and learn about other ways of thinking when I wasn’t able to travel in real life. That allowed me to dream and to understand the world was a lot bigger than what I had experienced in my small community.

As a writer, my favorite memories of libraries have been sharing my own books with readers. I’ve gotten to travel around Oregon and teach writing workshops and share passages from my novels. It’s always a joy to connect with readers over our shared love of books.

Another fun experience I’ve had as a writer is to serve on the foundation board for my local library, raising money to fund things like library cards for children, increasing our Spanish collection, backpacks with literary activities for early readers, and a maker space with a 3D printer. It’s rewarding to be a part of something that benefits the community. We are currently working to make the library more accessible to all patrons, installing automatic door openers and funding an ADA accessible computer station. I love that libraries have something for everyone and serve the entire community, and it’s wonderful to be part of that legacy.

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / iBooks / Kobo / Google Play

Author Bio:

Talia Rothschild, Italian American, is passionate about stories in many forms—music, dance, photography, film and, of course, great novels. She believes in thick hot chocolate and creamer in your tea. When she’s not happily writing, she’s mothering the sweetest baby girl and making memories with her husband. Her debut book The Immortal Game, coauthored with A. C. Harvey, hits the shelves May 2021.

Ashleigh Harvey is teaching high school physics and bringing her writing dreams to life. English-born and world-traveled, she loves filling her life with new adventures, such as visiting a new country or exploring the Wild West with her husband. She also finds escape in movies, music, literature, and yearly comic conventions. The Immortal Game is her debut novel, created alongside Talia Rothschild, her close friend.

I asked each author:

“What is your favourite happy ending from a book”

Ashleigh: Wildwood Dancing by Juliet Marillier. This is a kind of retelling of the 12 dancing princesses and the frog prince. Juliet created such a cool world and made such compelling characters and relationships. This will forever be one of my favorite books, and part of that is because of the ending. Without spoilers, because everyone should read this, the girl finds her true love, but in the most unexpected way. And it’s not cliche, it’s real and both heart wrenching and uplifting. Ooof, now I want to go read it again!

Talia: Mistborn. I mean the end of the whole trilogy. I’m a big fan of Brandon Sanderson anyway, but one of the most compelling points of his writing for me is how masterfully he weaves together a perfect ending. For me, perfect isn’t expected. Using Brandon’s own words, the best endings are “surprising yet inevitable.” I never would have guessed the ending, but good triumphed over evil, every loose thread came together seamlessly, and the whole thing left me both stunned and deeply satisfied. 10/10 recommend, even if just for that ending.

It looks like I have some new books to read!

Author Bio:

John Peragine is an author of over fourteen books. The Secrets of the Twilight Djinn series was written as a bedtime story for his son Max to cope with medical issues he was facing as a little boy. John is a full-time ghostwriter who lives with his son, wife, and a menagerie of animals on his vineyard overlooking the Mississippi River.

Website / Goodreads / Facebook / Twitter / Instagram

I had the pleasure of asking John "What is the craziest thing you’ve ever done in the name of research?" His response follows:

I wrote Max and the Spice Thieves for my son Max. He has a disorder called Cold Urticaria. Changes in the temperature of his skin make it react as if he had touched something like poison ivy. He gets itchy, burning hives all over his body. Sometimes it is annoying, but when he was younger, it was life-threatening because of the risk of his throat swelling.

It is hard to know what another person is feeling unless you have the same disorder. Although unintentionally, I got a little taste of what burning itching skin might feel like, especially when there is nothing you can do to relieve it.

I grew a yummy, spicy batch of habanero peppers in my garden one year. There were so many that I decided I needed to make salsa and can the rest. Not having dealt with fresh peppers from the garden, I really had no idea that I needed to wear gloves. I diced a couple pounds of them quickly before the pain started. My hands swelled and were red and painful.

I did what most people in my situation would do. Call the doctor. Nope! I looked on the Internet for a solution. The pain and swelling lasted over an hour, and I began trying all sorts of remedies. Cold water. Alcohol. Soap and water. Oil. Nothing worked, and then I found out another painful lesson. Never touch your face or any other part of your body. I felt like my body had been set on fire.

Only one thing worked- a giant bowl of cold milk. It took about two more hours before I could bear the pain and could take them out of the bowl. Max, my son, has that feeling whenever cold air hits him. He can even be getting out of a pool in the middle of summer, and his wet skin will cause welts to form.

As I wrote the feeling that Max has in the book, not only when he is affected by the cold air, but also when his magic builds up in his body, I remember that painful pepper lesson.

[Guest Post] Megan Squires on Traced

My Writing Room
by Megan Squires

I'm like a cat. I cannot focus on one thing if even the temptation for distraction is a possibility. If I'm on the computer, my email, Facebook  and several other forum pages are open on the screen. I can’t zero in on just one thing unless all outside distractions are completely removed. I've always been like this, and it makes productivity quite a challenge.

This is why I adore having my studio space as a place to write. For the past three years, I've had a photography studio in town where I photograph all of my newborn clients. However, just this last year I've utilized the space as a writing room as well. In addition to the huge picture windows and mini fridge stocked full of my favorite snacks, I absolutely love that I don’t have internet there. It’s a place I can go and not be tempted to check my email, to update my status, or to catch up on the latest celebrity gossip. All that exists is my computer, my thoughts, and some food to fuel my creativity.

I try to carve out two to three times a week where I can write at the studio after I drop my daughter off at school. That allows me a three-hour, solid chunk of time to dive into my world and get my thoughts on paper. But as all you writers know, we never have enough time to get it all out. That’s why I also spend about three more hours at night—usually from 10:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.—writing on my family room couch. When everyone else is asleep and when my responsibilities as mommy and homemaker are on hold, I jump on the chance to spend a few more quiet hours with the laptop. Apparently my characters are night owls, too, because my favorite scenes have all been written in the wee hours of the night. Maybe I work best when the line between creativity and delirium blurs, but it’s my routine, it really seems to work, and I love it!

[Guest Post] Jax Garren on Tales of the Underlight

Beauty and the Beast - Why We Love It
by Jax Garren

Beauty and the Beast has always been one of my favorite fairy tales. It seems to make a lot of people’s top lists! I think the timelessness of the story is why. Many fairy tales center around outdated gender and class roles or simple wish fulfillment (I’m looking at you, Cinderella). But Beauty and the Beast is a story about the triumph of our better selves—of love over prejudice, hope over despair.

In older versions of the story, such as Villeneuve (links to an abridged version of the oldest known published Beauty and the Beast) and Beaumont (the most famous version, published in 1756), Beauty has always been a good girl, lovely outside and in. She doesn’t care overly about her family’s wealth, is willing to work for her living and is brave enough to trade her life for her father’s when her request for a rose goes horribly awry. She’s easy to like. But even this seeming paragon can’t help being repulsed by the beast’s exterior.

The beast has been cursed, depending on the version of the story, for refusing the amorous advances of a fairy (Villeneuve), for arrogance and/or cruelty (Beaumont) or sometimes for no reason at all (various others). His character is harder to pin down than Beauty’s, though he is kind to her, has a temper with her farther and shows generosity to everyone. He is willing to keep Beauty at his castle against her will but does so to break his curse—a pretty compelling reason.

For him love comes quickly—before he’s seen her even. Beast falls for Beauty because of the bravery she shows in offering to take her father’s place. While I’m sure her looks don’t hurt his attraction to her, the story makes a point of showing it’s her character, not her appearance, he finds compelling. And yet he can’t believe someone so lovely could ever want him. This self-deprecation as well as the way he hides from people (unless enraged) hints that he is unable to accept himself since the transformation. Other people’s looks may not be of primary importance to him, but his own vanity causes him issues. (Not that I blame him! Who wouldn’t have a hard time coping with that?)

Beauty, after her initial fear at the beast’s appearance, quickly begins to see the great person behind the ugly façade. Though she grows to appreciate him as a friend, enjoying his company and loving the life she has at his castle, she can’t bring herself to be romantically attracted to him. I think this part of the story is very true to life. Humans are aesthetic creatures, even the best of us. Despite being an all-around great person, Beauty can’t quite make that leap from friend to curling up next to him at night. In some versions, I get the impression she wants to…but can’t until dramatic circumstances force her to reevaluate her feelings. Again, it’s hard to blame her. She’s not a vain or silly person. She’s us, having the exact same reaction we would have. And if she can overcome it, maybe we, too, can be better people.

This realistic conflict at the heart of the story is why I think Beauty and the Beast remains one of the most popular fairy tales to tell and retell. It touches on our fears that we are not loveable as we are, that people will not or cannot see the person inside who is trying to be good and needs to be loved. It is impossible not to want the beast to win the heart of the beauty, because when it happens we are reassured that we, too, can win our heart’s wish just as we are, flaws and all.

I used this same idea to build a modern Beauty and the Beast. The setting is wildly different and includes warring secret societies, magic and action-adventure mayhem. But the love story retains the same basic conflict. The one significant alteration I made is that Hauk, our beast, is a soldier who returned from war a burn survivor. Unlike the original tale, he isn’t looking for a way to break a curse and return to his old self. He’s trying to forge a new life out of the ashes of his old. He doesn’t see Jolie, our Beauty, as a catalyst to bring back the physical shape he lost. She is his inspiration for finding his old self internally, a man who allowed himself to love and be loved.

What are your favorite things about Beauty and the Beast?

How Beauty Met the Beast (Book 1) Summary

The Beast

Scarred. Damaged. Living with a terrible secret. Agent of the Underlight Wesley "Hauk" Haukon has nothing left but the fight for liberty against the oppressive Order of Ananke. He's starting to lose hope…and then he sees her.

The Beauty

Despite her night job as a burlesque dancer, grad student Jolie Benoit has always played the mostly good girl. That all changes following a scorching sexual encounter with a stranger whose face she doesn't see. After she's kidnapped by thugs and rescued by a man with a very familiar voice, Jolie becomes a pawn in a struggle she never knew existed.

Hauk knows he cannot have her, and resolves to protect his heart and his secrets. But as they work together and grow closer, he finds new reason to keep fighting. Dare he risk hope in a new life, one where Jolie can see past his ravaged face and where their friendship can grow into something more?

How Beauty Saved the Beast (Book 2) Summary

Jolie Benoit left her old life behind to become an agent of the Underlight. Training under Sergeant Wesley Haukon, she’s honing her combat skills, all the while coping with the intense sexual attraction she feels for Hauk. She keeps their friendship casual, but when his high school sweetheart transfers into their division, Jolie finds herself grappling with jealousy.

The Underlight gave Hauk a purpose, but he can’t escape his past completely. The physical and emotional scars from the fire that killed seven fellow Army Rangers will mark him forever. Jolie sends his protective instincts into overdrive, but he’s convinced he’ll never be worthy of her love.

Hauk is determined to keep Jolie from harm. But when the Order of Ananke ambushes them with a new weapon that neutralizes Hauk, making him vulnerable, it’s Jolie who must tap into her hidden strengths to rescue him—or risk losing him forever…

About Jax Garren
Jax Garren is descended from Valkyries and Vikings (she’s part Swedish) but was raised a small town girl in the Texas Hill Country. She graduated from The University of Texas with a degree in English and a minor in Latin and stayed in Austin to teach high school. During her eight years in public education she was in a riot, broke up fights, had cops storm her class with guns drawn…and met the most amazing young people who taught her more about life and hope than she taught them about any school subject.

Jax believes in happily ever afters. She married her real life hero, a handsome engineer who is saving the world through clean energy technology. Her heroine is Marion Ravenwood from Raiders of the Lost Ark, the perfect blend of tough and feminine. Jax blames Marion for her dream of traveling to Nepal to experience Himalayan palaces and monasteries and to drink yak butter tea.

Jax loves meeting new people, so if you see her out and about say hello! She’s always happy to raise a glass with her readers (or anyone else) in a toast to courage, adventure, and love.

[Guest Post] Real Mermaids Don't Need High Heels by Helene Boudreau

Title: Real Mermaids Don't Need High Heels
Series: Real Mermaids (Book 3)
Author: Helene Boudreau
Genre: YA, fantasy, mermaids
Format: E-book, 240 pages
Publication Date: February 1, 2013
Published By: Sourcebooks Jabberwocky
Source: Received from publisher for tour
 Synopsis from Publisher
Everyone’s favorite mer-girl Jade will be back to make a big splash as she enters high school in the hilarious third installment of the Real Mermaids series, Real Mermaids Don’t Need High Heels coming in February 2013. But before she does, she wants to share her favorite holiday treats and gift ideas, to help you have a mermaid-tastic holiday season!

About Helene Boudreau
Hélène Boudreau grew up on an island surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean but now writes fiction and non-fiction for kids from her land-locked home in Ontario, Canada.
She has never time-travelled or saved an endangered bird, nor has she ever spotted a mermaid in the wild, but she believes mermaids are just as plausible as sea horses, flying fish, or electric eels.
My Thoughts
I have been following this series since the first book (Real Mermaids Don't Wear Toe Rings) appeared on a list of books available for review from my contact at Sourcebooks. Although I am not usually a fan of the tamer middle grade books, I have however always been a fan for pretty much anything mermaid related.

Yes, I was THAT GIRL who watched Disney's The Little Mermaid as many times a day as I good fit in, memorizing every line and every lyric, and swam in the Lake Erie and Lake Nipissing in the summer months pretending that I was indeed a mermaid...and yes...I did also know the original (much sadder) version of the little mermaid tale...

These short novels are hilarious, yet emotional, as a young mer-human has to deal with the loss of her mother, the discovery of her heritage, body image, friendship, and love. It's an extremely entertaining serious and I am so glad I had the opportunity to read them all so far.

I'm not sure if I am supposed to put a review up yet, but I will hold of for now until closer to publication, but know that I do recommend these books. I am absolutely in love with Jade, and I think everyone needs to meet her!

Real Mermaids Festive Treats

Hi everyone! Jade here from Real Mermaids.

One of my favourite things about the upcoming holidays is the great treats we get to make and share. I love food so much, in fact, that I included a recipe for some of my favourite snacks in each of the Real Mermaids books.

My friend Cori and I thought we’d experiment a bit and ‘holiday-ize’ each recipe for you!

In my upcoming book, Real Mermaids Don’t Need High Heels (out Feb 1st, 2013), my cutie friend Luke came up with a genius campfire treat he called Peanut Butter Cup S’mores. Here’s a cookie version my friend Rachel shared with me, which I think would be PERFECT around a crackling fireplace (indoors!).

Peanut Butter S’more Bites

Beat together:
- 1 cup butter
- 1 cup peanut butter
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1 egg

Then add:
- 1 1/3 cup flour
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1/4 tsp salt

Drop into mini muffin tins and bake for 8 minutes at 350F. Remove from oven, place 3 mini marshmallows on top and return to oven for 1 minute. Cool. Drizzle with melted chocolate and try not to lick your fingers...

Happy treats and have a great holiday, everyone!

Love,

Jade

[Guest Post] Amy Lignor on Gilded Wings

A Day in the Life of a Warrior

Hey everybody! This is Matthew and I was asked to take you all through a ‘day in the life’ of ME up here. I have to say, it’s basically like a day in the life down there - just way brighter. Sometimes it actually hurts your eyes. My partner, Emily (you know, the sarcastic one) actually brought sunglasses up here. She kind of looks like she’s playing the lead in Grease. Anyway…

People ask if I sleep and I do…actually, more than I should. But when  I rise, I head into the TV room where I watch the news. I don’t like it most times. We see everything that’s going on down there and try to figure out ways to help from up here - which is really hard. After eating - and yes, we eat - BIG TIME. (I can’t even tell you how amazing the food is up here. Anything you want at any time of day. Forget McDonald’s, Heaven lets you have it ’Your Way’ all the time.

After breakfast I head to Michael’s classroom with Emily. She and I - and I know we’re too old for shenanigans now - still like to drive him nuts. Yesterday she brought one of St. Francis’ elephants into class (her name is Jenny). She trumpeted her horn while Michael tried to teach us about the Roman Army. I have to say…it would’ve been boring without the elephant. Jenny made cool special effects.

Heading into Gabriel’s classroom, Emily and I still train in the pit. We need to make sure we can fight down there, protect - unfortunately, if we’re a little on the angry side with each other the battles can get a little out of hand sometimes. But…I don’t think it can be helped…the emotions between us. Well…you all know by now what I‘m fighting for when it comes to her.

We’re getting prepared for our, hopefully, ‘third time’s the charm’ lifetime, and things will be way different. I still hold the hope that we’ll be partners down there in other ways besides the job when all is said and done. We usually break from each other after Gabe and Mike. She heads to Francis and I usually head to our favorite ‘love saint’ because I really need to get that whole thing together in order to make Em see that I’m the charming one…and not Jason.

There’s a lot of hallways to run around and doors to open up here, so it’s kind of an adventure everyday. And then, when the sun sets, I always head into the library (my favorite place) and Emily is always sitting there. I swear, I hope in one of these lives she can be a librarian. After all, that’s what she loves.

I hope I can meet you all up here someday; it would be cool since you‘re reading our stories. But, for right now, I’d rather meet you down there. Life is a whole lot of fun…and it’s SO not over for me and Em!

Until Next Time, Everybody.
Matthew, out!

“Actually, it’s not that bad.” Joe grinned. “They have very nice dormitories here. Loads of beds. We have bathrooms, showers and three square meals a day. In the mornings and afternoons we get to come downstairs and play music, read, talk...meet a whole heck of a lot of nice people like yourselves.”

“Doesn’t it get rather boring?”

“No. I can even do my own laundry. And every Tuesday and Thursday they show strange movie pictures to us. They’re fun. Best of all,” Joe continued, passing a bowl to Gregori, “we get ice cream.”

Gregori stared into the bowl of melting white goo.

“What’s ice cream?”

“What’s ice cream? Goodness, boy, you are in for a treat.”

Gregori dug the spoon into the bowl and raised it to his lips. As he stuck his tongue out and touched the icy, cold substance his head jerked back as if he’d been burned.

Anya was startled. “Is it that bad?”

Gregori smiled and put the whole spoonful into his mouth. “No, it’s great!”

“Slow down. Your insides will freeze.” Joe laughed. “See? There’s a lot of good stuff here in America.”

Gilded Wings Summary

The Beloved Angel-Warrior Team from Until Next Time Returns!
When Matt and Emily are sent on their second mission they have no idea how truly dark human nature can become...

Emily never wanted to face humans again. With the heartache that went on down below, she’s still trying to figure out how to save souls that don’t deserve saving. The only one she wants to see again is Jason - the young man she fell in love with who became the soulmate she simply can’t forget...

Matt was trained to protect and defend the souls down below. Longing to feel the heartfelt emotions that come from being human, Matt wants nothing more than to have just one life - one chance - to live and love the girl of his dreams...

The powerful team find themselves in a brand new century, living in the Gilded Age of New York City. Emily takes over the body of Anya, a young Russian girl who arrives on Ellis Island after a hideous tragedy. There she meets up with a strangely familiar young man by the name of Drew Parrish, who helps Anya survive in an unknown world of luxury, snobbery and…obsession.

What Anya’s inner angel doesn’t know is that the soul she loves is also back. This time around Jason goes by the name of Max Carrow. Once a quiet and kind boy, he’s now part of the ‘Four Hundred Club,’ and wants nothing more than to be among the most admired as he climbs the shaky ladder of society’s elite.

As two worlds merge, Emily and Matt struggle under the weight of their “Gilded Wings.” Not only will they have to figure out who they should fight to save, but they must also face a romantic choice that could destroy them both.

Until Next Time: The Angel Chronicles, Book 1 Summary

How does a girl choose between the one who steals her heart and the one who owns her soul?

Matt and Emily were created for a specific job. Raised and trained as the ultimate angel/warrior team, they are sent down to save, defend, judge and forgive, depending on the 'life' they've been assigned. What they don't realize is that the power of human emotions, such as love, anger, passion and fear can take over even the best of souls, causing them to make mistakes and follow paths that lead to confusion and heartache.

When the reason for their training is finally revealed, the angel/warrior team find themselves thrust into a world they know nothing about. Matt takes over the life of Daniel, a young man with a great deal of baggage. Emily becomes Liz, a girl living in a remote village who relies on nothing more than her own strength to survive. A violent storm erupts one night, and framed in the window of Liz's establishment is a frightening face. Let in by the soul of a Good Samaritan, the two visitors bring with them a past full of secrets that could literally change an angel's path and a warrior's plans.

From murder to redemption, this angel/warrior team must find a way to keep the faith they have in each other in a world that's ripping them apart.

[Guest Post] Moira Young on Rebel Heart

Movie Influences
by Moira Young

The first female hero I ever met was six inches tall, lived inside our tiny black and white TV, and danced and sang her way along the yellow brick road with her friends. It was, of course, Judy Garland as Dorothy in the 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz. I was four years old. There it was, the hero’s journey with its archetypal elements – the call to adventure, the road of trials with its allies and enemies, the ordeal, seizing the sword (in Dorothy’s case, the broomstick of the Wicked Witch) and the hero’s return – all to a catchy musical score. Little wonder that female heroes and the hero’s journey sank deep into my psyche.

As a wide-eyed four year old - stomach twisted in knots of fearful anticipation from title to end credits - I had no idea that this was a seminal experience. That this most magical of movies would become, not just my touchstone, but my most important literary influence. That one day I, too, would write a hero’s journey starring a strong-willed girl, and sneak in a few songs and dances along the way.

All I knew was that I loved movies. My dad had been a cinema manager in Glasgow before emigrating to Canada. He loved Westerns, epics, high dramas and sweeping romances and I inherited his passion for big stories. The first time he took me to the cinema - just him and me - we went to see Gone With The Wind. I was eight years old. The red velvet curtains, the plush seats, the grown ups, the smell of buttered popcorn, oh, it was all just unimaginably glamorous. It was shown with an interval. As Scarlett O'Hara stood silhouetted against the sky, fist raised and cried, 'As God is my witness, I'll never be hungry again' and the curtains swept shut, I was so overcome with emotion and excitement that I was sick into my popcorn bucket.

From there, Dad and I moved on to Dr Zhivago and Lawrence of Arabia and the die was cast. My love for visual storytelling on an epic scale stems was born. High romance. Great drama. Big canvas. Adventure. Courage. Danger. Passion. True Love. Betrayal. Death.
As I began to write Blood Red Road, I knew that, although it gives a nod to many genres, it would essentially be a Western set in the future. The film that it references most strongly is The Searchers, John Ford’s 1956 masterpiece starring John Wayne as Ethan Edwards, a deeply flawed hero. Many people classify the Dust Lands trilogy as dystopian, but I do not. Westerns used to be called horse operas and the Star Wars movies are often referred to as space operas or space Westerns, so I’ll have to start calling my books something similar; maybe post-apoc op?

Films have gifted me a rich visual imagination, so perhaps it’s no wonder that I write in a cinematic way. When my writing is going well, it's like there's a movie playing in my head and I just write down what I see and hear. I've ended up with a larger than life hero, epic adventure, danger, death, passion and betrayal, all played out on the big screen of a Western landscape. Fingers crossed for Blood Red Road, The Movie!

About Blood Red Road

Saba has spent her whole life in Silverlake, a dried-up wasteland ravaged by constant sandstorms. The Wrecker civilization has long been destroyed, leaving only landfills for Saba and her family to scavenge from. That's fine by her, as long as her beloved twin brother Lugh is around. But when a monster sandstorm arrives, along with four cloaked horsemen, Saba's world is shattered. Lugh is captured, and Saba embarks on an epic quest to get him back.

Suddenly thrown into the lawless, ugly reality of the world outside of desolate Silverlake, Saba is lost without Lugh to guide her. So perhaps the most surprising thing of all is what Saba learns about herself: she's a fierce fighter, an unbeatable survivor, and a cunning opponent. And she has the power to take down a corrupt society from the inside. Teamed up with a handsome daredevil named Jack and a gang of girl revolutionaries called the Free Hawks, Saba stages a showdown that will change the course of her own civilization.

About Rebel Heart

It seemed so simple: Defeat the Tonton, rescue her kidnapped brother, Lugh, and then order would be restored to Saba’s world. Simplicity, however, has proved to be elusive. Now, Saba and her family travel west, headed for a better life and a longed-for reunion with Jack. But the fight for Lugh’s freedom has unleashed a new power in the dust lands, and a formidable new enemy is on the rise.

What is the truth about Jack? And how far will Saba go to get what she wants? In this much-anticipated follow-up to the riveting Blood Red Road, a fierce heroine finds herself at the crossroads of danger and destiny, betrayal and passion.
