[Challenge] January 2012 Black Stallion Recap

The 2012 Black Stallion Reading Challenge is well under way!

My goal was to attempt to read at least one Black Stallion book per month, and I succeeded this month by reading (for the very first time ever) The Young Black Stallion by Walter and Steven Farley.

It was an interesting read, seeing where this mighty black stallion originated from. I know I always wondered. It was fairly easy to see where Walter and Steven's contributions are as they both have very different writing voices. It wasn't exactly what I was hoping for, but it was still enjoyable. I will post a full review soon.

Sal, from the Goodreads Group, has agree to let me share a link to his review. Be warned that there are spoilers.

So now it's your turn. How many Black Stallion books did you read this month? Which ones were they? Fill out the Rafflecopter form at the end of the post and remember to check in at the Goodreads Group page as well.

Remember that every single participant will receive a small swag package containing two bookmarks and a pen courtesy of RandomHouse Canada. More prizes will be open to participants who read higher quantities of books.

Here is a complete list of the books for this challenge:

These are the books written by Walter Farley, although The Young Black Stallion was co-written by Farley's son, Steven Farley. Steven Farley continued The Young Black Stallion series, about the Black's early years, and has written four Black Stallion novels, which are included at the end of the list.

Books are available at Chapters, Amazon, The Book Depository, and now they are also available for your e-reader! I just picked up a whole ton of them for my Kobo at kobobooks.com! Of course the local library is always an option as well.

  1. I read 2 in January, The Black Stallion's Filly and The Black Stallion and Flame. I thought I had read the latter book as a child but if I did, I must have skipped big chunks of it because I remembered only little bits here and there. The writing in that one was poor, and I just didn't buy the storyline. The Black Stallion's Filly had better writing and was more believable. It was overly long though, and occasionally dry. It's interesting reading these as an adult, they aren't what I remembered.

  2. That's great that you read two this month! Congratulations! I know what you mean about reading them now as adults versus reading them that first time when I was younger. I'm more critical now...I hope it doesn't ruin the books for me.

  3. I read the Young Black Stallion anf the Black Stallion Mystery in January.

And I had the problem with approaching the series from a more critical eye until I just decided to approach the books as fantasy novels set in a slightly alternate history :)

  4. That's such a wonderful idea! Maybe I just have to look at them as I did as a child, for fun, with no thoughts of critical reviews to be written.

Congratulations on reading two books! Great work!

  10. The library didn't have "The Black Stallion Revolts," so I had to skip ahead to "The Black Stallion's Sulky Coalt". Finished that one today....just barley making it in the month of April. ;-)
